GREAT ROYALTY FREE AVATAR ICONS FOR APPS
This is a commercial avatar icon collection intended for webmasters, app and game developers, etc. These cartoons are great as user profile pics on web-based applications, software, websites, forums, game,
Iphone and
Ipad apps.
How many?
There are currently 88 portraits, they are
EPS vector and can be edited. You can easily change hair color and the t-shirt color to create more variations.
What If I wanted 200 avatar icons?
Right now, there are close to 100 cartoon portraits in the collection.
Since the
clipart is pure vector
EPS you could easily get 200 or more out of the collection by changing hair color to create variations and save yourself money! Not every avatar yields 3 variations, but most will look good with a different hair color. There are exceptions, off course. For instance, an African American with ethnic hair that wouldn't make
sense with blonde hair.
TUTORIAL
If you know how to edit vectors, you don't need to read this. This is for those who don't really know how to change colors in Adobe Illustrator.
How to edit the vector cartoon portraits on Adobe Illustrator
I used the Cartoon Avatar Portrait Icon (SET 10) to demonstrate how you can derive more 3 variations from a single original. So as you can see, out of a "strawberry blond" I've got variations, a light
blonde, a brunette and Hispanic.
Quick Note: You could use any other vector editing software. I will demonstrate the color change with Adobe Illustrator because that's the software I have.
Just open the avatar (SET 10) then pick the blond avatar and copy onto a new board / page.
You need to bring up 3 tools:
- COLOR TOOL - To bring up the color palette, on your Illustrator top menu, go WINDOW > COLOR
- TOOL BOX - The Tool box palette is usually there when you first open Illustrator, but if is not there just go to WINDOW > TOOLS
- DIRECT SELECTION TOOL. This is in the TOOL BOX already. This is the arrow, usually the second one in the tool box list.
Tip: You can also use a COLOR SWATCH
If you want to be extra fancy, open a color SWATCH.
I show a Pantone color swatch in the example bellow just to show the endless choice of colors. Besides pantone there are other options. Adobe and Corel usually have those, and I think other vector software have them as well.
To bring up the Swatch books, go to
WINDOW>SWATCH LIBRARIES > (and here you'll see all the choices)
WINDOW>SWATCH LIBRARIES > COLOR BOOKS> (and here you'll see all the pantones in case you prefer working with them)
Let's carry on....
As you can see in the example I use the color mixer with the sliding arrows. I set mine as CMYK, but you could change to RGB. I like the Color mix tool, but as I explained before, if you prefer swatches, go for it.
SELECTING HAIR SHAPES.
Most hair are made with a single shape, but some hair are made of more than one shape. You just need to select shape by shape and recolor. Piece of cake.
DIRECT SELECTION TOOL
This tool allow you to select a single shape even if the drawing is grouped.
Select the hair shape(s) with the DIRECT SELECTION TOOL from the skinny tool box. The current color should reflect on the Color tool, and you just have to slide the percentages to mix the ink.
Or you can choose a color in the Pantone or other Swatch and click on that.
Voi-la, you have changed the color. Is pretty simple, no mystery.
You can then export or save the image as JPG, PNG or anything else.
This is very basic and simple.
I'm sure your web designer or graphic designer can do this with eyes closed.
It took me under 10 seconds to change the color.
CONCLUSION.
This is a simple trick to create variations of the same cartoon, and if you are using the collection in applications with Profile Pic, then you are giving users a lot more choices.
